Loneliness and Social Connectedness in Digital Society

| Abstract | The rapid expansion of digital technologies has transformed the ways individuals establish, maintain, and experience social relationships. Online communication platforms, social networking applications, and digital communities have created new opportunities for interpersonal interaction; however, they have also introduced complex challenges related to emotional isolation, reduced face-to-face engagement, and changing patterns of social belonging. This study examines the relationship between loneliness and social connectedness within contemporary digital society by analysing how digital communication practices influence individuals’ perceptions of interpersonal support, emotional attachment, and community participation. The research adopts a mixed analytical approach using a conceptual framework supported by a structured assessment of digital interaction patterns, perceived social support, and loneliness indicators. The findings suggest that digital connectivity does not automatically eliminate loneliness; rather, the quality, purpose, and emotional depth of online interactions significantly determine whether digital engagement strengthens or weakens social connectedness. The study highlights that meaningful digital participation, balanced technology use, and supportive online environments can contribute positively to social well-being. The research provides insights for understanding the psychological and social consequences of digital transformation and emphasises the need for strategies that promote healthier forms of digital interaction. |
