Environmental Education and Pro-Environmental Behavior among Young Adults

Abstract Environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and resource depletion have increased the need for environmentally responsible behaviour among individuals and communities. Young adults represent an important demographic group because their values, lifestyle choices, and decision-making patterns significantly influence future sustainability outcomes. Environmental education has emerged as a key mechanism for developing ecological awareness, environmental knowledge, and pro-environmental behaviour.
This study examines the relationship between environmental education and pro-environmental behaviour among young adults through a conceptual analysis of sustainability learning, environmental attitudes, behavioural change mechanisms, and educational strategies. The research explores how formal and informal environmental education influences sustainable practices, including energy conservation, waste reduction, responsible consumption, and participation in environmental activities.
The study adopts an analytical framework based on environmental education theories, behavioural science perspectives, and sustainability research. The findings indicate that effective environmental education improves environmental awareness, strengthens ecological values, and encourages responsible actions among young adults. However, challenges including limited practical engagement, information gaps, behavioural barriers, and differences between environmental intention and actual behaviour continue to influence outcomes.
The study concludes that environmental education is a critical foundation for developing pro-environmental behaviour among young adults. Integrating experiential learning, sustainability-focused curricula, digital awareness platforms, and community-based environmental activities can enhance behavioural transformation and support long-term environmental sustainability.
