Abstract The increasing environmental challenges associated with industrial development, resource consumption, and climate change have strengthened the need for effective environmental governance and corporate accountability mechanisms. Organisations across sectors are facing growing expectations from governments, stakeholders, and society to adopt sustainable practices, reduce environmental impacts, and demonstrate responsible business behaviour. Environmental governance provides institutional frameworks, regulatory mechanisms, and decision-making processes that guide organisations toward sustainable operations, while corporate accountability ensures that businesses remain responsible for their environmental actions and outcomes.
This study examines the relationship between environmental governance and corporate accountability by analysing how governance frameworks, regulatory compliance mechanisms, sustainability practices, and corporate responsibility initiatives influence environmental performance. The research adopts an analytical framework based on environmental management indicators, sustainability reporting practices, regulatory compliance measures, and corporate environmental responsibility outcomes.
A structured evaluation approach is applied to examine how governance mechanisms contribute to improved environmental performance and sustainable business practices. The findings indicate that organisations implementing strong environmental governance frameworks demonstrate improved sustainability outcomes, greater transparency, and stronger stakeholder confidence. However, challenges related to regulatory complexity, greenwashing practices, resource limitations, and inconsistent sustainability reporting continue to affect corporate accountability.
The study highlights that environmental responsibility requires more than compliance with regulations; it requires integration of sustainability principles into organisational strategies, decision-making processes, and long-term business models. Effective environmental governance depends on collaboration among governments, corporations, stakeholders, and communities. The research contributes to sustainability and corporate governance studies by demonstrating the importance of accountability-driven environmental management in achieving responsible and sustainable business development.
