Consumer Culture and Sustainable Lifestyle Choices

Abstract The expansion of consumer culture has significantly influenced contemporary lifestyles by shaping individual preferences, purchasing decisions, social identities, and patterns of resource consumption. Modern societies are increasingly characterised by rapid product innovation, changing consumption expectations, and the widespread availability of goods and services through global markets. While consumer culture has contributed to economic development and improved standards of living, it has also intensified concerns regarding excessive consumption, resource depletion, waste generation, and environmental degradation. Sustainable lifestyle choices have emerged as an important response to these challenges by encouraging responsible consumption practices, resource conservation, ethical purchasing behaviour, and long-term environmental awareness.
This study examines the relationship between consumer culture and sustainable lifestyle choices by analysing how consumption values, environmental consciousness, and social influences affect individual decisions regarding sustainable practices. The research adopts an analytical framework based on consumer behaviour indicators, sustainability awareness measures, and lifestyle adaptation patterns. The study evaluates the extent to which individuals integrate sustainability principles into everyday consumption activities, including purchasing preferences, waste reduction behaviour, and responsible resource utilisation.
The findings indicate that although awareness regarding sustainability has increased, consumer decisions continue to be influenced by convenience, affordability, social trends, and brand preferences. The study highlights that sustainable lifestyles require not only individual awareness but also supportive economic, social, and institutional environments. The research contributes to understanding the transformation of consumer behaviour within the context of sustainable development and provides insights for promoting responsible consumption patterns in modern societies.
