Abstract Contemporary communities face complex local challenges related to social inequality, environmental concerns, economic limitations, public service accessibility, and changing social needs. Traditional approaches to problem-solving often require additional support through innovative, participatory, and community-driven solutions. Social innovation has emerged as an important approach that enables communities to develop creative strategies, collaborative practices, and sustainable responses to local challenges.
This study examines the relationship between social innovation and community responses to local challenges through a simulation-based analytical framework. The research evaluates how community participation, collaborative networks, innovative practices, and local leadership influence problem-solving capacity and social development outcomes. A simulated dataset representing different levels of community innovation initiatives was developed to analyse the relationship between social innovation activities and community resilience.
The findings indicate that communities with stronger social innovation practices demonstrate improved problem-solving capacity, higher participation levels, stronger collaboration, and better adaptation to local challenges. Community-driven initiatives that combine local knowledge, collective participation, and innovative approaches contribute significantly to sustainable social development. However, challenges including limited resources, institutional barriers, unequal participation, and lack of coordination may influence the effectiveness of social innovation efforts.
The study highlights that social innovation represents more than technological advancement; it reflects the ability of communities to create meaningful social solutions through cooperation, creativity, and collective action. Strengthening community networks, supporting local leadership, and encouraging participatory approaches can enhance responses to complex social challenges. The research contributes to understanding how community-based innovation can support inclusive and sustainable development.
