Abstract The rapid expansion of digital communication technologies has transformed the ways young individuals participate in social, political, and community-based activities. Digital platforms have created new opportunities for youth engagement by enabling information sharing, collective discussion, online advocacy, and mobilization around social issues. Digital activism has emerged as an important form of contemporary civic participation, allowing young people to express opinions, organize campaigns, and contribute to social change processes beyond traditional institutional boundaries.
This study examines the relationship between digital activism and youth participation in social change through a simulation-based analytical framework. The research evaluates how online engagement, digital awareness, collective identity, social media participation, and civic motivation influence youth involvement in social initiatives. A simulated dataset representing different levels of digital activism participation was developed to analyse the relationship between digital activities and social change outcomes.
The findings indicate that meaningful digital participation contributes positively to youth engagement in social change by improving awareness, communication, collective action, and civic involvement. Young individuals who actively participate in digital campaigns demonstrate stronger social awareness and greater willingness to contribute to community-oriented initiatives. However, challenges including misinformation, digital polarization, unequal access to technology, and limited offline impact may influence the effectiveness of digital activism.
The study highlights that digital activism should be understood as a complementary form of social participation that connects online communication with broader social transformation. Effective digital activism requires responsible online behaviour, critical digital literacy, inclusive participation opportunities, and connections between digital initiatives and real-world actions. The research contributes to understanding how youth use digital environments as spaces for civic expression and social change.
