Post-Harvest Technology and the Reduction of Food Loss

| Abstract | Food loss after harvesting remains a major challenge affecting global food security, agricultural sustainability, and economic efficiency. Significant quantities of agricultural products are lost during handling, storage, transportation, processing, and distribution due to inadequate infrastructure, poor preservation methods, and inefficient supply chain practices. Post-harvest technologies have emerged as important solutions for reducing food losses by improving preservation, storage efficiency, quality management, and supply chain performance. This study examines the role of post-harvest technology in reducing food loss through a conceptual analysis of modern storage systems, cold chain management, processing technologies, packaging innovations, digital monitoring solutions, and sustainable food preservation approaches. The research explores how technological interventions improve product quality, extend shelf life, reduce waste, and enhance agricultural value chains. The study adopts an analytical framework based on food technology innovation, sustainable supply chain management, agricultural economics, and food security principles. The findings indicate that post-harvest technologies significantly reduce food losses through improved handling practices, controlled storage environments, efficient transportation systems, and advanced preservation methods. However, challenges related to high investment costs, limited infrastructure, technical skill requirements, and accessibility issues affect adoption, particularly among small-scale producers. The study concludes that post-harvest technology provides an effective pathway for improving food system sustainability and reducing agricultural losses. Strengthening storage infrastructure, promoting affordable preservation technologies, improving farmer awareness, and integrating digital monitoring systems are essential for developing efficient and resilient food supply chains. |
