Blockchain Technology for Agricultural Supply Chain Traceability

Author(s) Prof. Rozita Dara
Country United States
Abstract Agricultural supply chains have become increasingly complex due to global market expansion, rising consumer expectations, food safety concerns, and the need for transparent production systems. Traditional supply chain management approaches often face limitations related to information gaps, inefficient tracking mechanisms, fraud risks, and difficulties in verifying product origin. Blockchain technology has emerged as an innovative digital solution capable of improving agricultural supply chain traceability through decentralized data management, transparency, security, and real-time information sharing.
This study examines the application of blockchain technology for agricultural supply chain traceability through a conceptual analysis of distributed ledger systems, smart contracts, digital identification, supply chain transparency, and sustainable food management practices. The research explores how blockchain-based systems improve product tracking, enhance consumer trust, reduce information asymmetry, and support efficient agricultural supply chain operations.
The study adopts an analytical framework based on blockchain innovation, supply chain management theory, digital agriculture, and sustainable food system principles. The findings indicate that blockchain technology strengthens traceability by providing secure records of agricultural production, processing, transportation, and distribution activities. However, challenges related to implementation costs, technological complexity, infrastructure limitations, data accuracy, and stakeholder adoption affect widespread application.
The study concludes that blockchain technology provides significant opportunities for developing transparent, secure, and sustainable agricultural supply chains. Effective integration of blockchain with Internet of Things devices, digital platforms, and stakeholder collaboration can enhance food safety, improve market efficiency, and support consumer confidence in agricultural products.
