Organic Farming and Consumer Demand for Sustainable Food

Abstract Growing environmental concerns, health awareness, and changing consumption patterns have increased global interest in sustainable food systems. Organic farming has emerged as an important agricultural approach that promotes environmentally responsible production, reduced chemical dependency, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource management. At the same time, increasing consumer demand for sustainable food products has influenced agricultural markets and encouraged the expansion of organic production systems.
This study examines organic farming and consumer demand for sustainable food through a conceptual analysis of organic agricultural practices, consumer behaviour, market trends, environmental benefits, and sustainability-oriented food systems. The research explores how consumer preferences influence organic food adoption and how organic farming contributes to environmentally responsible and socially sustainable food production.
The study adopts an analytical framework based on sustainable agriculture principles, consumer behaviour theory, environmental economics, and food system transformation approaches. The findings indicate that organic farming contributes to soil health improvement, biodiversity conservation, reduced chemical pollution, and sustainable agricultural development. Consumer demand is influenced by environmental awareness, health considerations, ethical concerns, food quality perceptions, and trust in certification systems. However, challenges related to higher prices, limited availability, certification complexity, and consumer awareness gaps affect wider adoption.
The study concludes that organic farming and sustainable food consumption are interconnected elements of future food system transformation. Strengthening consumer education, improving market accessibility, supporting organic producers, and developing transparent certification mechanisms are essential for promoting sustainable food systems.
