Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Rural Economic Transformation

Author(s) Prof. Gianluca Brunori

Abstract Agriculture has traditionally been a major source of rural employment and economic activity; however, changing market conditions, technological developments, climate challenges, and evolving consumer demands require new approaches for strengthening rural economies. Agricultural entrepreneurship has emerged as an important mechanism for transforming traditional farming systems into innovative, value-driven, and market-oriented enterprises. By integrating entrepreneurship principles with agricultural activities, rural communities can create employment opportunities, improve income stability, and promote sustainable economic development.
This study examines agricultural entrepreneurship and rural economic transformation through a conceptual analysis of agribusiness innovation, value-chain development, digital agriculture, farmer-led enterprises, and rural market integration. The research explores how entrepreneurial approaches within agriculture contribute to productivity improvement, income diversification, employment generation, and rural economic resilience.
The study adopts an analytical framework based on agricultural entrepreneurship, rural development theories, innovation systems, and sustainable economic transformation principles. The findings indicate that agricultural entrepreneurship enhances rural economic performance through value addition, technology adoption, improved market access, and development of small and medium agricultural enterprises. However, challenges related to financial access, entrepreneurial skills, infrastructure limitations, market uncertainty, and institutional support affect successful implementation.
The study concludes that agricultural entrepreneurship provides a significant pathway for rural economic transformation by shifting agriculture from subsistence-oriented activities toward innovation-driven enterprises. Strengthening entrepreneurial education, improving financial accessibility, supporting digital platforms, and developing inclusive agricultural policies are essential for creating resilient and prosperous rural economies.
