| Abstract | Increasing air pollution levels caused by industrial activities, transportation emissions, urban expansion, and energy consumption have created significant challenges for environmental monitoring and public health protection. Traditional air-quality monitoring systems often involve expensive infrastructure, limited spatial coverage, and delayed data availability. Internet of Things (IoT)-based sensor networks have emerged as an advanced solution by enabling real-time, distributed, and cost-effective air-quality monitoring. This study examines air-quality monitoring through Internet of Things sensor networks by analysing sensor technologies, data communication systems, real-time environmental monitoring approaches, and intelligent data processing methods. The research explores how IoT-enabled monitoring systems contribute to accurate pollution assessment, early warning mechanisms, and sustainable urban environmental management. The study adopts a conceptual analytical framework based on IoT architecture, environmental monitoring research, smart city applications, and data-driven air-quality management approaches. The findings indicate that IoT sensor networks improve monitoring efficiency through continuous data collection, improved spatial coverage, remote accessibility, and real-time pollution analysis. However, challenges related to sensor accuracy, data security, network reliability, maintenance requirements, and calibration issues influence large-scale implementation. The study concludes that IoT-based air-quality monitoring systems provide an effective pathway for developing intelligent environmental management frameworks. Integrating advanced sensors, artificial intelligence-based analytics, cloud computing, and sustainable urban planning can strengthen pollution control strategies and improve public health outcomes. |
