Nature-Based Solutions for Urban Flood Risk Management

Author(s) Dr. Jessica Eisma

Abstract Rapid urbanization, climate change, and increasing extreme rainfall events have intensified urban flood risks worldwide. Conventional flood management approaches, primarily based on engineered infrastructure, often face limitations due to increasing climate uncertainty and changing urban conditions. Nature-based solutions (NbS) have emerged as sustainable alternatives that integrate ecological processes with urban planning to reduce flood risks while providing additional environmental and social benefits.
This study examines the role of nature-based solutions in urban flood risk management through a conceptual analysis of green infrastructure, ecosystem restoration, sustainable drainage systems, urban wetlands, and climate-resilient planning approaches. The research explores how ecological interventions contribute to flood mitigation, water retention, biodiversity improvement, and enhanced urban resilience.
The study adopts an analytical framework based on existing environmental research, urban resilience literature, and sustainable water management approaches. The findings indicate that nature-based solutions improve flood management efficiency by increasing water infiltration, reducing surface runoff, restoring natural drainage systems, and enhancing ecosystem services. However, challenges related to land availability, maintenance requirements, governance coordination, and public acceptance continue to influence implementation.
The study concludes that integrating nature-based solutions into urban flood management strategies provides a sustainable pathway for developing climate-resilient cities. Combining ecological approaches with conventional infrastructure, advanced planning, and community participation can improve long-term flood resilience and environmental sustainability.
