Green Building Technologies and Energy-Efficient Urban Development

Author(s) Dr. Ir. Zoltan Nagy

Abstract Rapid urbanization and increasing energy demand have intensified the need for sustainable approaches to urban development. Buildings represent a significant proportion of global energy consumption and contribute substantially to greenhouse gas emissions through construction activities, operational energy use, and resource consumption. Green building technologies provide an effective pathway for reducing environmental impacts while improving energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and long-term urban sustainability.
This study examines the role of green building technologies in promoting energy-efficient urban development through a conceptual analysis of sustainable construction practices, intelligent building systems, renewable energy integration, and resource-efficient design strategies. The research explores major green technologies including energy-efficient materials, smart building management systems, passive design approaches, renewable energy applications, and sustainable water management solutions.
The study adopts an analytical framework based on existing green building research, sustainable urban planning literature, and energy efficiency models. The findings indicate that green building technologies significantly improve energy performance, reduce operational costs, enhance environmental quality, and contribute to climate-resilient urban development. However, challenges related to high initial investment, technological complexity, regulatory limitations, and awareness gaps continue to influence widespread adoption.
The study concludes that integrating green building technologies into urban development strategies is essential for achieving sustainable and energy-efficient cities. A combination of innovative technologies, supportive policies, industry collaboration, and sustainable design practices can accelerate the transition toward low-carbon urban environments.
