Plastic Waste Management and the Transition toward Circular Consumption

| Abstract | The increasing generation of plastic waste has become a major environmental challenge due to its persistent nature, limited recyclability, and widespread accumulation across terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Conventional plastic consumption patterns based on production, use, and disposal have contributed to resource depletion, pollution, and long-term ecological risks. The transition toward circular consumption provides an alternative approach by promoting resource efficiency, waste reduction, product redesign, reuse systems, and advanced recycling technologies. This study examines the role of plastic waste management strategies in supporting circular consumption models and sustainable resource utilization. The research adopts a conceptual analytical framework based on existing studies, circular economy principles, and sustainable waste management approaches. The study analyses key strategies including plastic prevention, reuse systems, mechanical recycling, chemical recycling, extended producer responsibility, and consumer behaviour transformation. The analysis highlights that circular plastic management can reduce environmental impacts while maintaining material value within economic systems. The findings indicate that successful transition toward circular plastic consumption requires technological innovation, effective collection systems, supportive policies, industrial collaboration, and behavioural change among consumers. However, challenges related to plastic contamination, recycling limitations, economic feasibility, infrastructure gaps, and inconsistent regulations continue to influence implementation. The study concludes that integrating circular consumption principles with advanced plastic waste management systems can contribute significantly to reducing plastic pollution and developing sustainable resource cycles. |
