Urban Green Infrastructure and Climate-Resilient City Development

Abstract Rapid urbanization, climate change, and increasing environmental pressures have created significant challenges for modern cities. Rising temperatures, urban flooding, air pollution, biodiversity loss, and increasing pressure on urban resources have highlighted the need for sustainable and resilient urban development approaches. Urban green infrastructure (UGI) has emerged as an effective strategy for enhancing climate resilience by integrating natural systems into urban planning and improving ecological, social, and environmental performance.
This study examines the role of urban green infrastructure in supporting climate-resilient city development through the analysis of green spaces, urban forests, green roofs, sustainable drainage systems, and nature-based solutions. The research adopts a conceptual analytical framework based on existing sustainability literature, urban planning models, and climate adaptation strategies. The study evaluates how green infrastructure contributes to temperature regulation, flood management, carbon reduction, ecosystem improvement, and enhanced urban livability.
The findings indicate that urban green infrastructure provides multiple benefits by reducing climate vulnerability, improving environmental quality, and supporting sustainable urban growth. However, challenges including land availability, financial limitations, maintenance requirements, governance complexities, and unequal access to green spaces continue to affect implementation. The study highlights that successful integration of green infrastructure requires coordinated planning, policy support, technological innovation, and collaboration among urban stakeholders.
The research concludes that urban green infrastructure represents a critical pathway for developing climate-resilient cities by combining ecological functions with urban development objectives. Strategic investment in nature-based urban solutions can strengthen city resilience while improving the quality of life for urban communities.
