| Abstract | The increasing complexity of modern infrastructure systems has created a strong demand for advanced monitoring approaches capable of ensuring structural safety, reliability, and long-term performance. Traditional structural inspection methods often depend on periodic manual assessments, which may not provide continuous information regarding structural deterioration, damage development, or unexpected failures. Smart sensor technologies have emerged as an advanced solution by enabling real-time data acquisition, intelligent analysis, and predictive maintenance of critical infrastructure. This study examines the role of smart sensors in real-time Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems. The research explores how sensor-based technologies, including vibration monitoring, strain measurement, environmental sensing, wireless communication, and data analytics, contribute to improved structural safety and maintenance efficiency. A conceptual analytical framework supported by simulated observations is developed to evaluate the influence of smart sensor capabilities on structural monitoring performance. The findings indicate that real-time damage detection accuracy, continuous condition monitoring, predictive maintenance capability, sensor reliability, and intelligent data processing significantly contribute to improved structural health management. However, challenges including installation costs, sensor durability, data management complexity, communication limitations, and cybersecurity concerns continue to influence widespread implementation. The study contributes to structural engineering and intelligent infrastructure research by highlighting the importance of smart sensor technologies in developing proactive and data-driven structural monitoring systems. The findings provide practical implications for civil engineers, infrastructure managers, researchers, and policymakers seeking advanced solutions for improving structural safety and maintenance strategies. |
