Human Factors and Ergonomic Design in Automated Manufacturing

Author(s) Dr. Michael Anderson
Country United States
Abstract The rapid advancement of automation and intelligent manufacturing systems has transformed industrial workplaces by introducing advanced robotics, digital technologies, and human–machine collaboration environments. While automation improves productivity, precision, and operational efficiency, successful implementation requires careful consideration of human factors and ergonomic principles to ensure worker safety, usability, and sustainable performance. Ergonomic design has become essential for developing manufacturing systems that effectively integrate human capabilities with automated technologies.
This study examines the role of human factors and ergonomic design in automated manufacturing environments. The research explores how workstation design, human–machine interaction, cognitive ergonomics, worker safety management, and adaptive manufacturing systems contribute to improved industrial performance. A conceptual analytical framework supported by simulated observations is developed to evaluate the influence of ergonomic practices on automated manufacturing effectiveness.
The findings indicate that ergonomic workstation optimization, human–machine interaction quality, worker safety improvement, cognitive workload management, and adaptive system design significantly contribute to enhanced manufacturing outcomes. However, challenges including technology complexity, workforce adaptation, implementation costs, skill requirements, and organizational resistance continue to influence successful adoption.
The study contributes to human factors engineering and smart manufacturing research by highlighting the importance of integrating ergonomic principles with automation technologies. The findings provide practical implications for manufacturing engineers, industrial designers, safety professionals, and organizations seeking human-centered automation solutions.
