Abstract The rapid expansion of online education has transformed traditional learning environments by creating new opportunities for flexible, accessible, and technology-supported instruction. However, developing higher-order cognitive skills such as critical thinking remains a significant challenge in virtual learning environments. Collaborative learning has emerged as an effective pedagogical approach that encourages interaction, knowledge sharing, peer communication, and collective problem-solving among online learners.
This study examines the relationship between collaborative learning practices and critical thinking development in online classrooms. The research explores how peer interaction, group discussions, collaborative problem-solving, knowledge exchange, and reflective learning activities influence students’ analytical abilities and decision-making skills. A conceptual analytical framework supported by simulated observations is developed to evaluate the contribution of collaborative learning toward enhancing critical thinking outcomes.
The findings indicate that collaborative learning positively influences critical thinking by encouraging diverse perspectives, deeper discussion, argument evaluation, and active knowledge construction. However, challenges including limited student participation, communication barriers, technology constraints, unequal collaboration, and instructor facilitation difficulties continue to affect effective implementation.
The study contributes to digital education and online pedagogy research by explaining how collaborative approaches can strengthen cognitive development in virtual classrooms. The findings provide practical implications for educators, instructional designers, and educational institutions seeking effective strategies for improving critical thinking through collaborative online learning environments.
