Online Learning Engagement and Student Academic Persistence

Author(s) Dr. Manuel Area Moreira

Abstract The expansion of online learning has significantly transformed higher education by providing flexible learning opportunities and expanding access to educational resources. However, maintaining student engagement and ensuring academic persistence remain major challenges within digital learning environments. Student engagement, including participation, interaction, motivation, and involvement in online activities, plays an important role in determining whether learners successfully continue and complete their academic programs.
This study examines the relationship between online learning engagement and student academic persistence. The research explores how learner interaction, digital participation, instructor support, self-regulated learning, and online learning satisfaction influence students’ ability to continue their academic journeys. A conceptual analytical framework supported by simulated observations is developed to evaluate the contribution of engagement factors toward improving academic persistence.
The findings indicate that higher levels of online learning engagement can positively influence student persistence by strengthening motivation, improving learning satisfaction, and encouraging continuous participation. However, challenges including technological barriers, limited social interaction, reduced motivation, digital fatigue, and inadequate institutional support continue to affect learner retention.
The study contributes to online education and learning psychology research by explaining the relationship between student engagement and persistence in digital learning environments. The findings provide practical implications for universities, educators, and online learning designers seeking strategies to improve student retention and success.
