Abstract Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has emerged as a transformative technology in education by introducing new approaches to content creation, feedback generation, assessment design, and learning evaluation. The increasing availability of AI-based tools capable of generating text, analysing information, and supporting complex problem-solving has created significant opportunities and challenges for academic assessment systems. Traditional assessment methods are being reconsidered as educators seek approaches that evaluate deeper understanding, creativity, critical thinking, and authentic learning outcomes.
This study examines the role of generative artificial intelligence in shaping the future of academic assessment. The research explores how AI-assisted assessment design, automated feedback systems, personalized evaluation, academic integrity mechanisms, and adaptive assessment approaches influence educational practices. A conceptual analytical framework supported by simulated observations is developed to evaluate the contribution of GenAI toward improving assessment effectiveness.
The findings indicate that generative AI can enhance academic assessment by providing timely feedback, supporting personalized evaluation, and enabling innovative assessment formats. However, challenges including academic integrity concerns, AI dependency, assessment reliability, data privacy, and unequal access to AI technologies continue to influence adoption. Effective governance frameworks and human-centered assessment strategies are necessary to ensure responsible implementation.
The study contributes to educational technology and assessment research by explaining how generative AI may reshape evaluation practices in higher education. The findings provide practical implications for educators, institutions, policymakers, and technology developers seeking balanced approaches to integrating AI into academic assessment systems.
