Digital Literacy and Academic Achievement among University Students

| Abstract | Digital literacy has become an essential competency within higher education as universities increasingly integrate digital technologies into teaching, learning, assessment, and academic communication. Students are now required to possess not only basic technological skills but also the ability to effectively evaluate digital information, use online learning platforms, manage digital resources, and apply technology for academic purposes. Digital literacy therefore represents an important factor influencing students’ academic experiences and educational outcomes. This study examines the relationship between digital literacy and academic achievement among university students. The research explores how digital skills, online information evaluation abilities, technology-assisted learning practices, digital resource utilization, and academic technology confidence influence student performance. A conceptual analytical framework supported by simulated observations is developed to evaluate the contribution of digital literacy toward improving academic achievement. The findings indicate that higher levels of digital literacy can positively influence academic outcomes by improving access to learning resources, enhancing independent learning capabilities, and supporting effective use of educational technologies. However, challenges including unequal digital access, limited technology skills, information reliability issues, and inadequate institutional support continue to affect digital learning effectiveness. The study contributes to educational technology and higher education research by explaining the importance of digital competencies in contemporary academic environments. The findings provide practical implications for universities, educators, policymakers, and students seeking strategies to strengthen digital literacy and improve academic success. |
