Financial Literacy and Personal Saving Behavior among Young Adults

Abstract Financial literacy has become an essential factor influencing personal financial management and saving behaviour, particularly among young adults who are increasingly responsible for making independent financial decisions. The ability to understand financial concepts, evaluate financial choices, and manage income effectively plays an important role in developing sustainable saving habits. In an environment characterized by increasing digital financial services, consumer spending opportunities, and economic uncertainty, financial literacy provides individuals with the knowledge required to achieve long-term financial stability.
This study examines the relationship between financial literacy and personal saving behaviour among young adults. The research explores how financial knowledge, budgeting skills, financial planning awareness, and understanding of saving instruments influence saving decisions. A conceptual analytical framework supported by simulated observations is developed to evaluate the contribution of financial literacy factors toward improved saving behaviour. The findings indicate that individuals with stronger financial knowledge demonstrate greater financial discipline, improved budgeting practices, and higher willingness to engage in regular savings.
The study highlights that financial literacy is not limited to theoretical financial knowledge but also includes practical skills related to money management, goal setting, and responsible financial decision-making. However, challenges such as limited financial education, impulsive consumption patterns, peer influence, and lack of awareness regarding saving opportunities continue to affect young adults’ saving practices.
The research contributes to personal finance and financial education literature by explaining the role of financial literacy in shaping saving behaviour among young individuals. The findings provide practical insights for educational institutions, policymakers, and financial organizations seeking to promote financially responsible behaviour among younger generations.
