Abstract The rapid expansion of digital technologies has significantly increased the energy requirements of modern information systems. Data centres, cloud platforms, communication networks, and computing devices consume substantial amounts of electricity, contributing to environmental concerns and operational costs. In response to these challenges, sustainable computing has emerged as an important approach focused on improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, optimising resource utilisation, and promoting environmentally responsible information technology practices.
This study examines sustainable computing practices for developing energy-efficient information systems. The research adopts a conceptual methodology based on existing literature related to green computing, energy-aware system design, cloud optimisation, sustainable data centres, and environmentally responsible IT management. The study analyses key approaches including energy-efficient hardware, virtualisation, renewable energy integration, workload optimisation, power-aware algorithms, and sustainable software development practices.
The findings indicate that sustainable computing strategies can significantly improve operational efficiency while reducing the environmental impact of digital infrastructures. The analysis highlights that energy-efficient information systems require a combination of technological innovation, intelligent resource management, organisational policies, and continuous monitoring. However, challenges related to implementation costs, legacy infrastructure, performance requirements, and sustainability measurement remain significant barriers.
The study concludes that sustainable computing represents an essential pathway toward developing environmentally responsible information systems. Organisations adopting energy-efficient computing practices can achieve improved resource utilisation, reduced operational expenses, and stronger alignment with global sustainability objectives.
