Abstract The rapid growth of urban populations, increasing transportation demands, and the need for sustainable mobility solutions have accelerated the development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a transformative technology within ITS by enabling real-time communication among vehicles, infrastructure, transportation networks, and users through interconnected sensing and computing devices. IoT-based transportation frameworks facilitate advanced traffic monitoring, intelligent routing, vehicle tracking, smart parking management, public transportation optimization, and enhanced road safety mechanisms. This research examines the applications of IoT technologies in intelligent transportation environments and evaluates their contribution toward improving operational efficiency, mobility management, and user experience.
The study adopts a conceptual review methodology by analysing existing technological developments, application frameworks, and research perspectives related to IoT-enabled transportation systems. The analysis highlights that IoT integration provides significant opportunities for real-time decision-making, predictive traffic management, and sustainable transportation planning. However, challenges related to cybersecurity, data privacy, infrastructure investment, interoperability, and large-scale deployment remain critical barriers to widespread adoption. The paper emphasizes the importance of secure communication frameworks, intelligent analytics, and collaborative infrastructure models for developing reliable next-generation transportation ecosystems.
The findings indicate that IoT-based ITS represents a key pathway toward smarter, safer, and more sustainable mobility systems. Future transportation networks will increasingly depend on integrated IoT platforms combined with artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and edge intelligence to address complex urban mobility challenges.
