Blockchain-Based Academic Credential Verification in Higher Education

Author(s) Dr. Josep M. Miret

Abstract The increasing digitization of higher education has transformed the management, storage, and verification of academic credentials. Universities and educational institutions worldwide generate large volumes of digital certificates, transcripts, and qualification records; however, traditional credential verification systems often face challenges related to fraud, delayed authentication processes, data manipulation, and limited interoperability among institutions. Blockchain technology has emerged as a promising decentralized solution capable of improving the security, transparency, and reliability of academic credential management.
This research examines the application of blockchain-based systems for academic credential verification in higher education environments. The study explores how decentralized ledgers, smart contracts, cryptographic authentication, and digital identity mechanisms can enhance trust between universities, students, employers, and verification authorities. A simulation-based evaluation framework is developed to compare conventional credential verification approaches with blockchain-enabled verification models based on verification speed, security strength, data integrity, operational efficiency, and stakeholder trust.
The simulated analysis indicates that blockchain-based credential systems significantly improve verification efficiency and reduce the risk of fraudulent academic records. The findings demonstrate that decentralized credential frameworks provide students with greater ownership of their academic achievements while enabling institutions and employers to perform secure and transparent verification. The study concludes that blockchain technology can serve as a foundational infrastructure for developing reliable, interoperable, and future-ready academic credential ecosystems.
