Cybersecurity Awareness and Safe Online Behavior among University Students

| Abstract | The rapid expansion of digital technologies has transformed university environments into highly connected ecosystems where students increasingly depend on online platforms for academic activities, communication, financial transactions, and information sharing. While digital connectivity provides significant educational benefits, it also exposes students to cybersecurity risks including phishing attacks, identity theft, malware threats, social engineering, and privacy violations. This study examines cybersecurity awareness and safe online behavior among university students by analysing their knowledge levels, security practices, and behavioural responses toward common cyber threats. A simulation-based analytical framework is developed to evaluate the relationship between cybersecurity awareness and protective online practices. The study considers key behavioural indicators including password management, privacy protection, phishing awareness, software update practices, and security-conscious internet usage. The analytical findings indicate that higher cybersecurity awareness is positively associated with safer online behaviour and improved adoption of protective measures. However, variations remain in areas such as security policy understanding, advanced privacy management, and response mechanisms during cyber incidents. The research highlights the importance of continuous cybersecurity education programs, institutional awareness initiatives, and behavioural training strategies to strengthen digital resilience among university students. |
