Abstract The rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructures has transformed modern urban environments into highly connected smart cities capable of generating massive volumes of real-time data. Traditional cloud computing architectures face significant challenges in handling increasing data traffic, latency-sensitive applications, and continuous communication requirements from distributed urban devices. Edge computing has emerged as an advanced computational paradigm that enables data processing closer to data sources, thereby improving response time, reducing network congestion, and enhancing operational efficiency in smart city ecosystems.
This research investigates the role of edge computing in enabling real-time data processing for smart city applications. The study examines the contribution of edge-based architectures in intelligent transportation, smart energy management, environmental monitoring, and urban security systems. A simulation-based evaluation framework is developed to compare conventional cloud-centric processing models with edge-enabled computing environments based on latency reduction, processing efficiency, bandwidth utilization, and service reliability. The analysis demonstrates that edge computing significantly improves real-time decision-making capabilities by minimizing data transmission distance and enabling localized intelligence.
The findings highlight that edge computing represents a fundamental technological foundation for next-generation smart cities. However, successful implementation requires addressing challenges related to scalability, cybersecurity, resource management, interoperability, and distributed system governance. The study concludes that hybrid edge-cloud architectures provide a sustainable approach for developing intelligent, responsive, and resilient urban infrastructures.
