Artificial Intelligence Applications in Smart Agricultural Decision-Making

Abstract Agricultural decision-making has become increasingly complex because farmers must simultaneously consider climatic uncertainty, soil variability, crop health, water availability, pest pressure, input costs, market conditions, and environmental sustainability. Conventional decision-making remains strongly dependent on farmer experience, periodic field observation, and generalized recommendations, which may be insufficient when agricultural conditions change rapidly across locations and production stages. Artificial intelligence offers an alternative approach by converting heterogeneous agricultural data into timely and context-sensitive decision support.
This study examines the application of artificial intelligence in smart agricultural decision-making through a simulation-based analytical framework. The proposed system integrates machine learning, sensor-generated information, weather observations, crop-condition indicators, soil characteristics, irrigation requirements, pest-risk signals, and farm-management parameters. A synthetic dataset representing 320 agricultural decision scenarios was developed to compare conventional and AI-assisted decision-making across crop selection accuracy, irrigation efficiency, pest-risk detection, fertilizer-use efficiency, and overall decision quality. Because no real farm dataset was supplied, all numerical results are explicitly treated as simulated analytical outcomes rather than empirical field measurements.
The simulated comparison indicates a consistent advantage for AI-assisted decision-making across the selected dimensions. The strongest modeled improvements occurred in irrigation efficiency and pest-risk detection, where continuous data processing allows management interventions to respond more rapidly to changing environmental conditions. Artificial intelligence also demonstrated substantial potential for optimizing fertilizer recommendations, improving crop-selection decisions, and integrating multiple agricultural variables into coordinated farm-management strategies.
The analysis nevertheless identifies important limitations involving data reliability, infrastructure availability, algorithmic interpretability, affordability, cybersecurity, interoperability, and farmer trust. AI recommendations should therefore complement rather than displace agronomic expertise and farmer judgment. The paper concludes that responsible integration of artificial intelligence can strengthen precision, responsiveness, resource efficiency, and sustainability in agricultural decision-making when supported by reliable data systems, appropriate human oversight, and locally relevant agronomic knowledge.
